Was?
Frank Markowski, der mitausstellenden Künstler, wird uns durch die Ausstellung führen."Elementar – Hand, Klang, Natur" – A project by Frank Markowski (sculpture), Jainem Jeong (paintings) and Bodo Hartwig (sound). From Friday, June 26 to Saturday, August 1, 2026
Jainem Jeong leaves her canvases to the Wadden Sea of her South Korean homeland. What returns has absorbed the tides, salt and the life of the mudflats – nature describing itself. Alongside these are Jeong´s sculptural casts made from Korean mulberry paper: they capture the surface of living tree bark; the pigments used to paint them are produced by the artist herself, from plants and earth. Impression and colour spring from the same source: nature.
Frank Markowski shapes by hand. His objects, made of stoneware, pulp or cast in bronze, emerge from a direct physical dialogue with the material – and bear words on their plinths that are not explanations, but openings into the realm of association. The organic works thrive on intuition: their grace entices the viewer to look, their curves tempt one to touch, and the words let the mind wander. The sensual opens a window to meaning. It tempts us to transcend the boundaries of perception.
Bodo Hartwig´s works invite us to listen – and in doing so create images that no eye can provide. His field recordings and installations reveal acoustic layers in which ecological processes and human interventions overlap. From the sound of a bamboo forest growing to a sound object that waits until someone presses the button behind the screen. Then it starts and accelerates. The screen itself bears no image, but an inverse soot imprint: the negative of an emission. Harmony is no promise here. Humanity appears as part of a cycle that it has itself disrupted.
Placed side by side, these three positions reveal what ´elementary´ can mean: not the untouched, which no longer exists as such – but that of which everything is made, and with which we are constantly engaged. Through observation. Through touch and listening. Through what remains.
